New York Stock Exchange listed footage and stock photo portal Shutterstock has declared a cash dividend of $0.24 per share of its common stock, payable on March 17. The new dividend represents an increase of approximately fourteen percent over the previous quarterly dividend.

On-line provider Pond5, that says it is world's largest online marketplace for royalty-free video, newly claims to be the first stock media company to exceed 30 million licensable royalty-free video clips. With 100,000 video artists uploading 15,000 new videos every day, Pond5 boasts millions more clips than any other stock media provider. In addition to the work of individual providers, Pond5 has deals to offer material from Reuters, the Associated Press and NFL Films.
LOLA ACQUIRES AERIAL LIBRARY RIGHTS

Footagehouse LOLA Clips has acquired the 4K aerial archive of SoMotion, the archive of pioneering aerial photographer Ben Kelly whose 4K catalogue includes extensive aerials across Iceland, UK and Europe. SoMotion, headquartered in the town of Lewis in Sussex, England, has been shooting Ultra High Def material using drones and helicopters since 2007. Founded in 2015 LOLA has offices in London and Los Angeles and markets a collection that includes material from RAP Entertainment, London’s ITV Archive and other aerial collections.
FOCAL LAUNCHES MENTORING SCHEME

Industry body FOCAL International is launching a mentoring programme to provide help and guidance to newcomers to the archive world looking to grow a career in all areas of the footage industry. FOCAL says it is seeking to enrol mentees who are students in production, media, the arts, culture, cinema, journalism or history and have a strong interest in archival heritage and the audio-visual world. Applicans can be new entrants into the industry or individuals at a mid-career pivot ,or have just landed a challenging position and want guidance in a new environment. They will need to commit to a six-month programme to include a minimum of one-hour online monthly meetings with the mentor and a full-day event this September.
FOOTAGE MARKET GROWTH PREDICTED

In a report, market research company TechNavio says it expects the size of the stock video market to grow by USD 204.30m between 2020 to 2025 with more than half of the growth to come from the US market. According to the report, the year-on-year growth rate in 2021 has been 5.68%.
UK’S ITN EXTENDS GETTY DEAL

Getty Images says it has extended its deal to represent the archive of UK TV news provider ITN. Getty first signed with ITN in 2016, and the extended agreement is described as “multi year.” The ITN Archive offers over a million clips of iconic news coverage of world events shot on film and video. It spans more than 65 years commending in 1955.
MULTI MILLION DOLLAR DIGITIZATION FOR ISRAELI ARCHIVE

The Israel Film Archive has put on-line a collection of films previously closed to the public that shows wars, elections and vintage advertisements, as the result of a $10m digitization program. Divided into sections, the website includes a paid on-demand category containing 300 Israeli feature films and a free historic area with digitised versions of rare films, every newsreel created in Israel between 1927 and 1972, home movies, and family collections. According to The Times of Israel the earliest material is a Lumière Brothers film of Jaffa, Bethlehem and Jerusalem shot in1896 followed by Thomas Edison’s cameraman’s work from the Holy Land in 1903.
AMIA LAUNCHES MOVING IMAGE INDUSTRY EMPLOYEES SURVEY

AMIA, the Association of Moving Image Archivists, is inviting participation in its Annual Salary & Demographics Survey of the moving image industry. The plan is to anonymously gather data from persons working in and with moving image archives to study factors impacting compensation and professional development. The survey has been developed in response to AMIA member interest in salary data from the archives profession and, in particular, from media archivists and people in related fields whose primary work is with audiovisual materials. The survey aim to gather data on age, race and ethnicity, sexual identity, level of education, and years of professional experience to examine if and how these factors interact to affect salary, employment, and professional advancement. A summary of survey results will be available for download from the AMIA website.
UK CONSUMER MEDIA SPEND BOOM

British consumers spent a record figure of almost £10bn ($13.5bn) on home entertainment last year as the pandemic fuelled a boom in streaming services such as Netflix, Prime and Spotify. The figure included an increase in revenues from sales of physical music formats after two decades of decline, a good portion of it on vinyl.

The AP Archive has announced a new partner supplier in the leading Turkish conglomerate company Demirören Media Group that operates the 24-hour news channel CNN Türk (a joint venture with CNN), the news agency DHA, and the TV channel Kanal D. The deal gives access to footage of “cross-topic breaking and planned news from Europe and the Middle East”.
GETTY IMAGES GETS ADDITIONAL INVESTOR AHEAD OF FLOAT

Following the announcement earlier this month that Getty Images is to go for a public listing in conjunction with acquisition company Neuberger Principal Holdings II, the tech-focused holding company Multiply Group is entering into a binding commitment for to make a $75 million investment at the equivalent of $10 per share.. According to Getty, the investment from Multiply increases total capital commitments to $875 million with an expected total equity income of approximately $1.3 billion. Getty Images says its common stock is to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol “GETY.” Proceeds are expected to pay down existing Getty Images debt and capitalize the Company’s balance sheet. The closing of the transaction is expected in the first half of 2022. The Multiply Group is an Abu Dhabi-based holding company investing in a diversified portfolio of high-return businesses.
AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT UPS SUPPORT FOR PRESERVATION

The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia is getting A$41.9 million (US$39m) in Federal Government funding over four years to digitise the nation’s “at-risk” audiovisual heritage held across eight National Collecting Institutions. The funding announcement supports: digitising 240,000 “at-risk” audio, video and film items before they deteriorate irretrievably, safeguarding at-risk First Nations audiovisual collections, increasing existing digitisation efforts across film, audio and video, significantly expanding digital storage capacity from six petabytes to 165 petabytes over four years, boosting storage and cybersecurity to protect systems from cyber-attack, creating an off-site data centre to provide improved security and a “world leading” disaster recovery capability, the ongoing digital preservation of newly digitised material for each participating institution.
FOOTAGE INDUSTRY LEGEND DIES AT 93

One of the legendary figures of the footage industry, Gerry Weinbren, has died at the age of 93. With over 60 years of experience as a cinematographer and film maker he was an innovator and pioneer in producing stock shots of such high quality that his collection became a port of call for Hollywood movie makers. He travelled the world shooting windscreen 35mm material, his artistic handling of his camera capturing his favourite subjects — airports and jet liners, lighthouses surrounded by pounding waves and many of the world’s top locations, from the Taj Mahal to the Sydney Opera House. His shots of those places were special, his fractional pan on subjects bringing them to life. South Africa born, Weinbren founded Index Stock Shots in London in the early 1970s. He remained at the forefront of the sector often being ahead of the crowd in future trends such as HD and 4K. In 2018 he received the FOCAL International Lifetime Achievement Award. By that time, Weinbren’s shooting days were becoming numbered and he very reluctantly put down his film camera, turning to digital 4K to produce his final shots, and by then most of his 35mm collection had been skillfully transferred to 4K, a process he oversaw personally
FOCAL AWARDS RETURNS TO “IN PERSON” FORMAT

After two years as a virtual streaming event, FOCAL has announced that the 19th annual FOCAL International Awards will be held “in person” in London’s Marylebone district at the 120-year-old Landmark Hotel, London. The date: June 23 next year. FOCAL International is the footage industry trade body Federation of Commercial Audio-Visual Libraries.

Getty Images has entered into a business agreement with New York stock Exchange listed CC Neuberger Principal Holdings II, a special-purpose acquisition company formed through a partnership between CC Capital and Neuberger Berman. Upon closing of the transaction, a newly formed parent company of Getty Images will itself become a publicly traded company with its common stock expected to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol “GETY.” The business combination estimates the value of Getty Images at an enterprise figure of $4.8 billion (£3.6b).

The successful computer games in the Metal Gear Solid series have been removed from stores by its Japanese publishers, Konami, due, the company says, to licensing issues over historical footage used in the productions. A company statement read: ”We are currently working on renewing the licenses for select historical archive footage used in-game, therefore, we have made the temporary decision to begin suspending the sale of Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3 and all products that include these games from digital storefronts globally.” Credits for the productions list footage suppliers as programme makers Video Ordnance Inc of New York, and Hollywood-based footage house Producers Film Library.

UK footage house Screenocean has a five-year extension to its representation deal for the Reuters Television News Archive. Since 2017 Screenocean has hosted over 1.2 million clips from the video archive of world news.

Royalty-free portal Shutterstock, which recently added new applications to its workflow suite, says it now has 23 million video clips on board, an increase of two million over the holding in April this year. Its latest quarterly financial report shows overall revenues at $194.4 representing an 18 per cent increase compared with the same period last year.
