Script | LEAD: AN ARMY PRIVATE IS GOING TO PRISON FOR LIFE IN THE BEATING DEATH OF A FELLOW SOLDIER WHO WAS RUMORED TO BE GAY.(vo)A MILITARY JURY AT FORT CAMPBELL, KENTUCKY IMPOSED THE SENTENCE TODAY IN THE CASE OF PRIVATE CALVIN GLOVER.THE 18-YEAR-OLD SOLIDER WAS FOUND GUILTY OF PREMEDITATED MURDER.THE PANEL FOUND THAT LAST JULY GLOVER USED A BASEBALL BAT TO CRUSH THE SKULL OF BARRY WINCHELL AS HE SLEPT IN THEIR FORT CAMPBELL BARRACKS.TODAY WINCHELL'S MOTHER CALLED ON MILITARY LEADERS TO MAKE CHANGES TO INSURE THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN.(SOT)"It's now the holiday season our son will not be home to celebrate Christmas this year or any other year. We can not bring Barry back. We miss him terribly. On the night of his murder, Barry was sleeping and unaware of the danger to him. The military should now be wide awake and aware of the immediate danger to its young men and women. Our military leaders have to power to influence and make changes in the lives of young people today. It is important that top leaders set the right example. End all the hatred and prejudice. Please insure that no other family has to go through this ordeal. And please don't let Barry have died in vain."A GAY AND LESBIAN ACTIVIST SAYS SHE'S RELIEVED TO HEAR THE VERDICT, BUT NOT COMPLETELY SATISFIED.(sot)"The army's policy is clearly flawed and not only does it not protect gays and lesbians, but it probably puts them in harms way. We should not be having to go through this trial, but we are. And for that I'm very saddened."THE JURY LEFT OPEN THE POSSIBILITY THAT GLOVER COULD BE PAROLED... BUT DID NOT SET A TIMEFRAME.ATLANTIC |
