INTERSECTION CRASH NEAR MISS
SILENT COLOR NIGHTTIME TRAFFIC CAMERA FOOTAGE OF TRUCK FLYING THROUGH INTERSECTION THROUGH A RED LIGHT AND NARROWLY AVOIDING A HUGE ACCIDENT,
Chandler police are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a man who stole a pickup truck last month before taking its teenage owner on a wild ride in the back of it. Edgar Campos, 17, and a group of his friends were listening to music from the truck’s stereo on Dec. 18 when a man jumped inside and attempted to drive off. Campos jumped in the bed of the truck, and the driver tried to force him out by repeatedly swerving and later ran through a red light at Arizona Avenue and Ray Road, police said. A red-light camera at the intersection captured video of the truck swerving back and forth through a red light at the intersection, barely missing a car. “If that guy hits that truck he’s (Campos) dead,” said Detective David Ramer, Chandler police spokesman. “This guy’s pretty lucky.” When the man later came to a stop at Queen Creek and Price roads, he ordered Campos out of the truck at gunpoint. Campos complied and the man again fled in the truck, police said. The man was described as Native American, between 25 and 35 years old and wearing a black beanie. The truck was discovered stripped of parts on the Gila River Indian Community on Dec. 27. If anyone has information about the incident, they can call Chandler police at (480) 782-4130. The incident is reminiscent of one that happened in 2000 and ended tragically. Ahwatukee Foothills resident Larry Vannoy, 66, had gotten home from a party on Nov. 19, 2000, and was still in a tuxedo when he saw two men and a teenager driving away in his custom pickup truck. Vannoy jumped into the bed, and the trio drove to the Gila River Indian Community, where they hit him repeatedly in the head with a lawn mower blade that had been fashioned into a machete. Kenrick Vincent, 34, and James Cooper, 30, were sentenced to life in prison with no parole for their roles in the slaying, and Dale Whitman, 24, struck a deal in which he got 20 years in prison.
