Iraq's Sawa Lake dying from climate change
MUTHANHA, IRAQ - APRIL 26: The Lake Sawa in Iraq's Muthanna province is dying due to climate change and harmful agricultural policies. The lake, which has no inlet or oulet, was an important habitat for over 31 species of birds before it was completely dried up. Located near the city of Samawa the lake has now left its place to cracked soil and dried lake bed. A drone shot on Tuesday, Apr. 26, shows abandoned facilities around the completely dried up lake due to years of drought. Water scarcity, high salt concentration and sandstorms due to climate change cause the destruction of important ancient structures, cultural and natural heritage of world heritage in Iraq. Wide shot of cityscape showing sky clouded by sandstorm STORYLINE United States (U.S.) forces were "on track" in the drive toward Baghdad despite sandstorms that enveloped troops on the battlefield on Tuesday, said Air Force Major General, Victor Renuart, at a press briefing at Camp As Sayliyah in Qatar. U.S. forces were "maintaining and increasing pressure on all fronts, even in the bad weather," Renuart said. Renuart said coalition aircraft would fly more than 1400 combat and combat support missions over Iraq on Tuesday, despite the weather. Heavy sandstorms swept across Iraq and Kuwait hampering the progress of coalition forces. In the southern Iraqi desert troops of the 5th batallion of the 11th Marines fired at Iraqi troops. The unit believed they were engaging members of Saddam Hussein's elite Republican guard, not regular army troops. Because of reduced visibility and howling winds, the unit could not call in air support, but they were able to deploy artillery and direct it by spotters in the field. Combat missions from two aircraft carriers were called back because of bad weather - and at least a dozen planes returned without reaching Iraq. Near Nasiriyah in Iraq those troops who could, took the chance to catch up on much needed rest. However, getting comfortable was no easy feat while being blasted with dust and grit. Reports from Baghdad suggested it was not only the invading troops that were suffering. The capital city was blanketed in yellow forcing many of its residents to hunker down and wait out the storm. AccuWeather said Iraq often sees sandstorms in the spring, but Tuesday's conditions were exceptional for the region, bringing dust and sand from as far away as Egypt and Libya.
