STORYLINE:
R&B (Rhythm and Blues) singer and actress Aaliyah died in a plane crash on Saturday in the Bahamas.
22-year-old Aaliyah was travelling with eight other Americans on a plane bound for the United States after shooting her latest music video in the islands.
The plane crashed after takeoff from Abaco Island, killing eight and critically injuring the ninth passenger, a man who was flown to Florida for
treatment, officials said.
The private plane was leaving the Marsh Harbour airport en route for Opa-locka, Florida, when it went down on Saturday evening, according to a police spokesman.
The plane crashed at the end of the airport's runway at 6:50 p.m. EDT (2250 GMT).
The cause of the crash was unclear.
Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration in Atlanta, said the plane was a Cessna 402 owned by Skystream, a company based in Pembroke Pines, Florida.
Detroit-born Aaliyah (born Aaliyah Haughton) became an overnight sensation in 1994 at the age of 15 with her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number.
By the end of the decade, she had a lucrative record deal with Virgin and has gone from strength to strength.
Aaliyah's song "Try Again" earned her a Grammy nomination for best female R&B vocalist in 2000 and she made her feature acting debut in the action film "Romeo Must Die."
