STORYLINE:
Two pilots became the first to fly around the world on Wednesday by way of the north and south poles, in one helicopter, in a single trip.
US-born 66-year-old Jennifer Murray and British-born 56-year-old Colin Bodill landed their red Bell 407 helicopter in Texas more than five months after beginning their long journey.
They flew more than 32,200 nautical miles through 26 countries, stopping for fuel 101 times.
"It's great to be back. It's been a long time. It's surreal to be back here right now," Bodill told reporters upon landing in Fort Worth.
This is the second attempt by the two pilots to set the world record. They first tried in 2003, but after a near death crash, were unable to complete the trip.
Murray, who learned to fly helicopters at the age of 54, was the first woman to pilot a helicopter around the world in 1997, and in 2000 she was the first to do it solo.
She received high praise from her co-pilot.
"This woman has flown around the world four times now. No other woman in history has ever accomplished anything near what Jennifer has accomplished, so she's got to be the female aviator of all time," Bodill said.
Murray, who was born in Rhode Island but great up in Britain, said her most emotional moment during the 171-day trip was landing in Antarctica, where they crashed in 2003 during their first attempt at the same world record.
Murray and Bodill were seriously injured in that crash, caused by whiteout conditions and pilot error.
"That was very emotional and incredibly special and never to be forgotten. We went to the place and we buried the key to the helicopter there (the one that crashed) and that was a very healing and wonderful moment," Murray said.
Bodill said the most difficult part was severe weather that almost prevented the pair from getting to the north pole last month.
As part of a fundraising effort during the trip, the pair stopped at some sites of SOS Children's Villages, an organisation that provides homes for orphaned and abandoned children in 125 countries.
Murray and Bodill started and ended their journey called "Polar First" in Fort Worth because it is Bell's home.
